| Once upon a time, Raven Moon wanted a rattle, and he wanted to make it himself. He'd never considered himself an artist. He'd seen plenty of gourd rattles around, but heard that gourds could be hard to clean out, and he didn't want a rattle like everybody else had anyway. Raven went into the woods and found a stick to use for a handle. He experimented with different kinds of papier mache and paper pulps to make the shaker. His partner Yana Breeze was just then studying about semi-precious gemstones and their healing properties, so he tried putting some of them in his rattle. They made a beautiful, gentle sound. Soon, other folks wanted Raven rattles too. Then, once upon twenty-one years ago, Raven, who had indeed become an artist, started selling his creations at the Saturday Market. Once upon last Saturday, he was still selling his rattles, and his booth was declared "Beautiful!" though indeed it had been all along. And I do believe he is living happily ever after.
Our protagonist Raven loads his booth and wares onto his bike trailer and pedals off to Market every Saturday. He sets his tables at a kid-friendly level, and puts out plenty of signs encouraging folks to "please, shake 'em!" The whimsical, magical creatures filled with gemstones are grouped, some by shape, some by size. Some look like small statues, some hang on cords as pendants, some even glow in the dark. The more traditionally shaped rattles with handles are displayed on a clever rack make from two upturned round cedar planters. If all the textures and colors and shapes are not inviting enough, Raven's smile will draw you in and reassure you that, really, it's OK, you can pick 'em up and shake 'em!
If you'd like to experience Raven's rattles in person, stop by booth 19, at the nortwest corner of the fountain, pert' near any Saturday.
