September 2005 Beautiful Booth of the Month Award:

Ayala Talpai
Diligence

Ayala Talpai's booth is the antithesis of the tidy and orderly booth that attracts because it is easy to understand. It's a booth that catches your eye with its exuberant display of colors and textures and then invites you into its cozy den to set a spell and make sense of the whole thing as you watch Ayala calmly spinning any number of exotic fibers (bamboo fiber this time) into yarn.

Ayala designs and sews folkloric style clothing that is simple in cut, sturdy in construction and delicious in detail. Laces, trims, buttons, ribbons and roses show up in all the right places. The fabrics are rich in color and varied in texture, from gauzes to wools to brocades. The clothing is displayed simply but effectively on long poles running through the arms. I imagine the closet of gypsy royalty would look a lot like this.

A second glance introduces you to her passion for felting, and her sense of humor. Above her head a felted dragon clutches a hapless piggy in its talons, while tall wizard hats await the perfect wizard at her elbow. A woman with intimate knowledge of the ways of wool, Ayala does what she can to convert everyone into felters by selling her books on felting, complete with felting needles.

You can find Ayala and her booth in space 106, just to the right of the stage.
