Market Assistant-Set up/Take down
General Statement of Duties:
A Market Assistant-set up/take down is responsible for setting up and taking down the infrastructure of the market before and after market hours. During this time he/she is also responsible for helping the Market Managers, the events management staff and the security to regulate activities of Market members and the public in accordance with Market rules, various municipal regulations and the rules of common sense. The Market Assistant is not an enforcer but a communicator of information. He/she should be able to effectively communicate guidelines to Market members and patrons in all types of situations and he/she should be able to communicate important situational information to Market Managers in a timely and effective manner.
Before and after regular Market hours, the crew sets-up and takes-down the Market. This is a split shift position. The hours for this position can be Saturday 4:30 am-10:30 am and 4 pm – 8 pm but workers should be prepared to change schedules as needed. Market assistants are supervised by the Operations manager or supervisor on site.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This job entails setting up and taking down the tents, tables, chairs, fences and other duties involved with creating a public marketplace. This job requires constant vigilance and attention to surroundings during working hours. It is not a time to hang out with friends or day dream. Market Assistants are the first line of safety for the Market and also Market's representatives to the public. In doing this job, Market Assistants must remain constantly alert and on the move. They must arrive on time and check in with the Site Operations Manager. They must be able to lift 50 lbs. They must have an attention to detail and respect for Market, city and county property. They must become familiar with all aspects of their community and anticipate where they might be needed next. They must work well without supervision and should set priorities realistically. They should always be ready to deal with a crisis. Market Assistants should be familiar with vendor and city regulations and are encouraged to be trained in First Aid and CPR techniques.
The Saturday Market is dedicated to sustainability and workers must be able and willing to sort compostables and recyclables from the trash. This will be done in a safe and clean manner.
At the end of each day, the Market Assistant shall note any unusual occurrences on the log sheets located at the Market stage. Any situation requiring more than five minutes of a Market Assistant’s time to resolve shall be reported to the Market Manager or Assistant Manager for evaluation.
While on duty during Market hours, a Market Assistant shall wear a Saturday Market staff t-shirt or safety jacket (provided). In addition, Market Assistants should work together as a team with other Market Assistants, the Market Manager and the Booth Assistants.
The Assistant should monitor all safety equipment including flagging and fencing to make sure it is in its proper place and use safety cones to mark any potential pedestrian hazards.
Before Market opens the Market Assistant shall make sure that all safety flags and fences are in place, that all traffic cones are removed after 9:30 a.m. and all traffic warning signs are adjusted, and that Market members are observing parking courtesies.
For Market closing, traffic cones should be put in place at exactly 5 p.m. and removed at 6:30 p.m. and Market members should be observing parking courtesies.

Good physical condition. Job requires several hours of constant walking and heavy lifting and carrying of trash bags and Market equipment during Market hours and also during set-up and take-down of Market equipment.
Must commit to working on Saturday of Oregon Country Fair.
Wages: $8.95/hr to start. Job is temporary for three weeks. Upon a satisfactory evaluation, job becomes permanent.
